I’m a US Government civil servant who accepted a 2-year assignment in Kazakhstan to work in the embassy. That makes me a diplomat, I guess. Well, at least my accreditation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that I’m a diplomat. Most of my friends and relatives would probably disagree, though. I’m also 42, and a single mother of a fantastic kid. When 15-year-old Sean learned that he was being uprooted and dragged literally half way across the world, he said, “Okay.” He picked out the things that he wanted to bring with him, we put the rest in storage, and he said goodbye to his best friends and got on a plane with me.

We’ve had some interesting adventures over here, and for the most part I’d say that this was a really positive experience for both of us. Sean adores his small, close-knit international school, and I love my job.

After reading other blogs from people living abroad, I decided that I’d give it a shot. I’m not a particularly talented writer, nor are my observations of the sort that give one pause… I’m just another single mom, who gets to be a diplomat for a while.
